![]() ![]() I set the RPi’s IP address to a fixed one on my router. I installed piCorePlayer with just LMS (I removed the Squeezelite player, which is installed by default) and set up the connection to the Syno. I thought LMS might be happier with a network rather than a USB connection. I thought I’d give the RPi 3 a go anyway, as I had a spare one. But I found that the RPi 3 wasn’t happy running the server with my roughly 50,000 tracks, plus cover images and so on. I had previously set up an RPi 3 to run LMS from a mirrored USB drive, so it’d be easy to go down that route. The Mac would be connected via wifi, but a server connection to data should be via as fast Ethernet as possible. The choice was an RPi because it can sit next to my router and the Syno and be connected via fast Ethernet. Mac or Raspberry Pi?įor me, that’s a choice of two - a Mac or a Raspberry Pi (RPi). So, leave the music on the Syno and run the LMS on a platform that’s likely to be supported for some time. My NAS is there to centralise all my data it makes backup much easier for one thing. I then decided option 3 was not a good idea. There may be foolproof step-by-step out there by now. ![]() It’s probably better that way, as I don’t want you wasting time like I did.īut I won’t put you off Googling. As I didn’t have any luck with Docker, I’m not going to share any links. I found I wasn’t the only one struggling to get it to work. I wanted to keep LMS in place on the Syno, so I tried installing it on Docker. Leave the music on the Syno and run LMS on another computer.Move both LMS and my music to another computer or NAS drive. What is Docker? From the interwebs: ‘It is basically a container engine that uses the Linux Kernel features like namespaces and control groups to create containers on top of an operating system’. If you have an Intel-based Syno (I have), install Docker so that the Docker version of LMS can be run - there’s no reason to believe support for the Docker version will disappear in the foreseeable future.Sooner or later there will be security or support issues. Stay with DSM 6 and the last version of LMS developed for it.If you’re in a similar situation there are four choices that I can see: Why is definitely another post! So where next? The music on my NAS remains my primary streaming source. I’ve been running LMS on a Synology DS218+ NAS for two years or more, having moved on from a Minimserver-based system (that’s possibly another blog post) and have thousands of albums from approaching 40 years of collecting CDs and downloads. Sooner or later, we’ll all have to move to it. LMS for Synology has been shelved.Īnd DSM 7 is now here, launched on 29 July 2021. That went well with DSM 6 updates, but DSM 7 proved too big a hump to overcome. ![]() Last year, after Synology stopped supporting Logitech Media Server, the LMS community stepped in and provided updated versions of LMS. Thank you in advance for any help that you may provide! Let me know if there is any other information that might be needed to help with this issue.Let’s backtrack a bit.
